The twilight of the small

Mom and I were up in Roxboro today talking to a guy who runs a grading company and is helping some developers look for buildable land up there. He said that the town was demanding full engineering proposals for sites before granting approvals and that one problem was that, since all the mom and pop engineering shops have been rolled up into larger engineering firms, it's often hard to get small jobs done for a reasonable cost.

In most cases the rolling up of entire sectors should create an opening for smaller players to come in and offer smaller jobs, it offers a toehold in a market. But it could be that the fixed costs and/or insurance it takes to stand up an engineering firm make that difficult. We shall see.

Similarly, with Dick's having basically sewn up the brick and mortar sporting goods market after the pandemic put Omega Sports out of business there are few places to try on tennis shoes. Sure I can order them from specialty tennis web sites but I can't try them on. So I am stuck wearing these goofy KSwiss things forever. Dick's only has shitty Nikes and the like. It kind of sucks.
